An 1860s sandstone terrace undergoes a warm and considered renovation.

Completed in 2019, Studio May’s renovation of an 1860s sandstone terrace in the heart of Darlinghurst balances period architecture with contemporary materiality, and the result is a home that invites an immediate sense of ease.

The Melbourne-based Interior Design Studio is a collaboration between Naomi Webster and Martine Bonich, who share an appreciation for enduring spaces and “special moments of delight in the detail”.

Spacious living areas bathed in Sydney’s lemony light.

For the terrace’s fit-out, Studio May favoured natural materials that complement the elegance and character of the home’s original heritage features. Honest to material, many of the structure’s original features and details were beyond repair, and were thoughtfully replaced by bespoke profiles, trims and decorative details.

Practical considerations and improvements such as protection from the sun, natural ventilation and thermal efficiency were seamlessly incorporated into the design.

As living room seating, our very own Moss Chair was selected for the project. Naomi from Studio May says “The Coco Unika range has a really nice, relaxed feel to it and we were drawn to the natural materials of the pieces.”

Studio May Bathroom Darlinghurst Residence

Co-Designer Naomi Webster says her favourite detail of the house is the bathroom vanity.

A soft colour palette, appreciation for texture and an attention to detail render a home that marries elegance with comfort. It’s the kind of space in which we picture our Coco Unika pieces being right at home. We love seeing our Moss Chair in good company at the Darlinghurst residence, at ease with its bespoke craftsmanship and timeless interior design.
