Gathered: Our new Japandi-inspired collection
Here in Australia, we’ve just come into winter, and one of our favourite things to do this early in the season is to hygge up our homes with some thoughtful rearranging. We lay out our softest throws, move our armchairs to the sunny corners and pile up nooks with cushions. With this spirit of nesting in mind, we are launching our newest collection, Gathered featuring Japandi-inspired handcrafted furniture and homewares.
Gathered - Winter '21
Drawing on two of our favourite styles, Japandi is the fusion of Japanese interior design with elements of the Scandinavian aesthetic. Japandi style combines the classic minimalism of both Japanese and Scandinavian design in a way that feels elegant, natural and harmonious. We can’t get enough of it.

With Gathered, we continue to deliver on our ethos of elevating everyday living with simple, timeless and collectable pieces for the home. We’ve interpreted Japandi style in a way that embraces craftsmanship, drawing on the cosiness, comfort and conviviality of Scandinavian design and the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which appreciates the beauty of the imperfect and examines the impermanence of nature.
This collection includes new dining tables, chairs, tableware and décor in our signature materials of timber and leather. Every piece is intended to be mixed and matched with those of our previous collections while working seamlessly with cherished pieces you already have at home. As with all of our pieces, each one celebrates the form and function of its natural material.

Gathered is an expression of Coco Unika Founder Lauren Pridham’s desire to “make home a feeling”. “Our mission is to build and maintain lasting memories within the home. At Coco Unika, we are driven to make home a feeling, and one way we do this is by using our pieces to bring the beauty of nature indoors.”

On her design inspiration, Lauren shares, “finding beauty in timeworn treasures and imperfect handcrafted objects is really what drew us to the Japandi style. The two design principles combine in a cohesive, harmonious and undeniably beautiful way. They evoke a feeling that we wanted to capture with our collection. We always strive to create meaningful pieces that are simple, well-crafted and reflect the beauty of their natural materials. Pieces that will be loved and treasured from generation to generation, getting better with use and age.”

Leather to us is the perfect example of wabi-sabi in a material. The leather in each Coco Unika piece is unique and imperfect with marks and gradations – it ages beautifully. The timber tableware will also mark and age, developing a subtle patina with use.
Gathered introduces several pieces of design-led statement furniture to the Coco Unika collection. Statement tables – the Solus, Sol and Luna – are inspired by celestial symbols of the sun and moon, the sources of light we appreciate the most during the winter season. Our Kristina Arch Mirror is as large as it is bold, with a simple arc shape that adds light and dimension to any room.

We’ve also worked with natural fibres for our new textiles – we particularly love the warmth and textural expression of our Shorn Sheepskin Rug and Fluffig Cushion.

With ongoing restrictions to holidays and travel, there really is no better time to make home a feeling, with pieces that offer warmth, comfort and beauty. In Lauren’s words, “as we retreat indoors and take our days a little slower, the launch of our new collection comes just in time to enjoy the cosy season in style. We are looking forward to seeing our new collection bring joy and happiness into homes for the season ahead and the many to come.”
